Mission Trips
Hurricane Katrina
After Hurricane Katrina
devastated
Louisiana and
Mississippi,
St. Francis partnered with Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St. Louis,
Mississippi, and have provided ongoing financial support to the community, as
well as sponsored a number of mission trips
to the area, involving members
of the church.
The support will continue in this
ravaged area as long as the need is so great, and the support is available.
Haiti
The poorest country in the
Western
Hemisphere is also a
concern of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina.
The late Bishop William Beckham was
instrumental in bringing the plight of one particular area, Cange, to the
attention of Episcopal churches.
During the past two years, St.
Francis has partnered with four other Episcopal Churches to build a school in
Chapoteau,
Haiti,
on a site at the top of a hill, next to the small church there.
This extremely poor area of
Haiti
now has 275 children attending school.
Eventually, as the school grows,
more than 600 children will be able to build better lives for themselves and
their families. Several members of the church have traveled to Haiti
and seen the remarkable progress (and tremendous need) in the area.
In partnership with a
Florida-based organization called Food for the Poor, St. Francis purchased
one-half of a truck that is being used to deliver food to the very poor families
living in the mountains of Haiti.
